A five-year-old agreement between two Pittsburgh-based healthcare giants can’t be expanded past its June 30 expiration date
The consent decree was signed in 2014 between health insurer Highmark and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. It was designed to allow Highmark customers access to UPMC facilities without being charged out-of network rates.
The agreement was originally set to expire on June 30th, but state Attorney General Josh Shapiro was among those seeking to have the deadline extended.
A ruling from Commonwealth Court keeps that deadline in place, clearing the way for a possible appeal.
The next stop would be state Superior Court, with the PA Supreme Court possibly weighing in as well.
