The holidays are here, so take extra caution around your home since there could be an increased risk of falls.
Dr. Lorri Lankiewicz, with Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers By Balance for Wellness, told our newsroom that there are a couple of different reasons why falls can happen more this time of year. She says people hang lights from their home and trees, leave decorations around which can cause a fall, or are in a rush from the busy to-do list this time of year. Many time people aren’t paying attention to what’s in front of them.
Dr. Lankiewicz says injuries from falls are something people deal with year-round. Some stats show that 1/3 of Americans age 65 and older fall each year. From those falls, every 11 seconds an older adult is brought into the ER.
Some safety suggestions…you can always have someone else hang your lights or make sure your decorations are out of the way and not a tripping hazard.
