Howard J. Weir, Sr, 97, of Butler, passed peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, February 11, 2024, under the care of Concordia at Cabot.
Born August 11, 1926, in Butler, he was the son of the late Alvie C. and Elizabeth (Esser) Weir.
Howard was a graduate of Butler High School. Following graduation, he went to serve his country during World War II in the 3rd Armored Division in Europe. He was employed by the Butler VA Medical Center as a maintenance technician in the boiler room from where he retired after 48 years of service. Howard was a lifelong member of Unionville Evangelical Presbyterian Church and Unionville Grange #1971 (Butler Co. Pomona Grange). He was also a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge #272 F & A.M. York Rite Bodies of Butler, Valley of New Castle Consistory, Syria Shrine of Pittsburgh, Butler Elks #170, American Legion Post #117 and the Butler V.F.W.
He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Patricia J. (Mahalik) Weir, whom he married on November 24, 1949; his son, Dr. Howard “Jay” Weir, Jr. and his wife Sarah “Sally” of Canfield, OH; his daughter, Patricia “Joyce” Dobson of Butler; “Pap” to four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; Jocelyn (Mike) Shockley and their children Carson and Ada and Hilary (Tim) Miller and their children Jackson and Sarah, and “Uncle Howard” to several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Weir and Verl Weir and two sisters, Margaret “Peg” Snider and Alva Mae Laughner, all of Butler.
Howard was a steadfast and irreplaceable light, beloved by everyone who had the pleasure to know him. He taught us that today is always a good day to be kind, to live with empathy, to be grateful, to let go, to help others, to be generous, to take chances, to take action, to live with grace, and to find joy in all circumstances. His legacy is one of kindness, faith, and friendship.
His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all relatives, friends and neighbors who have surrounded and supported them during his final days.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, February 15, 2024, from 5-7 PM at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 E. North St., Butler, PA 16001. A funeral service with Military honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc. with Pastor Matthew Kail of Unionville Evangelical Presbyterian Church officiating.
Howard will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Burial Estates.
