As temperatures continue to rise, challenges still remain our furry friends.
At the Butler County Humane Society, the dogs outdoor time has been limited due to the heat. State law requires that when temperatures reach 90 degrees animals are only allowed a maximum of 30 minutes outside for their protection.
Shanna Best is the Director of Shelter Operations at the Human society and she says that although pets have limited time outside, they try to get them outside more often in short bursts. Although, what’s most important is keeping the animals safe.
“They get a little frustrated that they can only go outside for a little bit. But, you have to be really careful with certain breeds like pugs and bulldogs because they can have bad breathing issues in the weather and have heat strokes,” Best said.
With the historic high heats, Best says it’s crucial to monitor your pet’s health when taking them outside and if they are having any symptoms to immediately take them to the vet. Then while walking your pet keep them on grass as cement sidewalks can burn their paw pads.
