JoAnn (McCoy) McElhaney, 92, formerly of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away on April 26th in
The Villages, Florida. She moved to The Villages in 2021 and enjoyed walking, swimming and
warm weather.
She was born June 17, 1931, in New Brighton, Pennsylvania to the late Mont R. McCoy and
Anna Marie (Shay) McCoy.
JoAnn was a graduate of the 1949 Class of Finlay Township High School. She was a member of
Meridian United Presbyterian Church. She served as an Elder, a Trustee, a Deaconess, and a
Sunday School Teacher. She chaired many committees; she was a member of the Tuesdays Bible
Studies and the Woman’s Association of the Presbyterian Church. JoAnn worked at the
Community Meals and the Butler Community Food Cupboard. She worked with Meals on
Wheels for over 20 years. She enjoyed playing cards, was an avid reader and walked 4 miles a
day.
JoAnn is survived by her two sons, Randall A. McElhaney and his former wife Lynn McElhaney
of Virginia Beach, VA, and Douglas D. McElhaney and his wife Diane of Butler, PA; two
daughters, Barbara A. Stopenski and her husband Stanley of The Villages, FL., and Cynthia K.
Blair of the Villages, FL; five grandchildren, Katie Thayer and her husband Jonathan of
Ashland, VA, Laura C. McElhaney of Virginia Beach, VA, Shannon Harrison and her husband
Brandon of Toledo, OH, Rebecca Stopenski and her husband Alex Porro of Wilmington, DE,
and Stephen Stopenski and his wife Judy Doong of San Diego, CA; one great grandson, Wesley
Harrison; one great granddaughter, Juliette Porro; a twin brother, R. John McCoy of Aliquippa,
PA; one sister-in-law, Fern (Starr) McCoy of Spencer, WV, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 63 years, Regis McElhaney, her parents,
seven sisters, Beverly Joyce McCoy, (infant), Jean Harshbarger, Grace Platt, Ruth Rowe, Sarah
“Becky”; Scarbro, Beatrice “Betty” Brodmerkel, and Dolores Searight, one brother, Donald M.
McCoy and one son-in-law, Daniel Blair.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, and 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at Thompson – Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA 16001.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024, at 11:00am, at the Meridian United Presbyterian Church, 4150 Highland Avenue Butler, PA, with Reverend Stephen M. Franklin, officiating.
Burial will take place in the Butler County Memorial Park.
