John M. Mahler, age 103, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on April 30, 2022 at the Butler V A Community Living Center.
He was born November 12, 1918 in Butler, Pennsylvania to the late John G. Mahler and the late Margaret Long Mahler.
John was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in WW II as a B-17 Pilot completing 38 missions in Germany and Italy. John retired from the U.S. Air Force Squadron Reserves at the Pittsburgh Airport as a Lieutenant Colonel.
John was a Production Manager at Pullman Standard, retiring in 1979, after 42 years of service. After retirement he was a consultant for 10 years.
He was member of the Butler Elks Lodge #710, Member of the I.O.O.F. of Butler, and a member of the American Legion Post # 117 of Butler. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and yard work. John exercised twice a week at the VA Medical Center and rode his bike. He and his wife Edna enjoyed wintering in Florida for 21 years.
He is survived by three daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Rivers (Robert) of Butler, PA, Joyce Whelan (Thomas) of Thomasville, NC, and Marianne Kern (Steve) of Lutz, FL; two sons, John J. Mahler (Kathi) of Butler, PA; Robert C Mahler (Karen) of Lutz, FL; 13 grandchildren: Mike and Scott Rivers, John Eric and Jennifer Mahler, Jessica Mahler-Hoover, Brian and Michelle Mahler, T. Christopher, Jeremy and Joshua Whelan, Chad and Christina Kern; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 Great Great Grandsons.
In addition to his parents. he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna M. Sarver Mahler whom he married on September 17, 1941 and who passed away on November 22, 2004, and four sisters.
Friends will be received Friday, May 6, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Thompson – Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street Butler, PA.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 11:30 AM at the funeral home with Rev. David Janz officiating.
Military Honors will be provided by the Marine Corps League Bantam Marine Detachment #743 of Butler at the funeral home.
Burial will take place in the Calvary Cemetery, Butler, PA
