John Mark Edwards, 73, of Butler, Pennsylvania, passed away at Allegheny General Hospital on November 23, 2024, after a courageous year-long battle with brain cancer. Mark was a highly intelligent and deeply thoughtful man, known for his dry sense of humor and quick wit. His calm demeanor, sharp mind, and unique personality left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Royd and Ethel Edwards and brother-in-law John Weigand. He is survived by his loving wife, Kim Edwards; his son, Thomas (Sarah) Edwards; two step-sons, Dustin (Jamie) Thompson and David (Adriane) Thompson; his sister, Barbara (Jerry) Weigand; and his cherished grandchildren, Frederick and Charles Edwards. He is also survived by seven step-grandchildren: Vaughn, Nolan, Dax, Molly, Emily, Sadie, and Penny Thompson; as well as his two nephews, Charles (Andrea) Weigand and Brian Weigand. Mark’s faithful canine companion, Betsy, also survives him, providing comfort and companionship through his final days.
A 1969 graduate of Knoch High School and a 1974 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Mark began his distinguished career at Butler Memorial Hospital in 1977. Over his 41 years with the hospital, he took on various roles, ultimately retiring in 2018 as the Risk Manager and Safety Officer. Even in retirement, Mark’s dedication to his community continued when, in 2020, he was asked to return to Butler Health System to assist with the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his personal life, Mark was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the course with a steady group of close friends, valuing both their camaraderie and the peaceful moments the game provided. Mark was also a talented musician who enjoyed playing the piano, a gift he cherished throughout his life. Mark was a member of Butler/Victory Masonic Lodge #272.
Mark’s legacy is one of integrity, kindness, and a devotion to those around him. He was a mentor to many, a steadfast friend, and a loving family member. His family and friends will forever remember him for his quiet strength, and the lasting impact he made on their lives.
