Butler County’s director of elections is trying to bring awareness to a position on the ballot this year that isn’t a commonly run for seat.
Aaron Sheasley says that each of the 89 precincts in the county will have a Judge of Elections position on the ballot this spring. He talked to our newsroom about the position.
“Judge of elections is really the person who oversees the election process in terms of procedures, getting the vote tallied, and the equipment back to us on election night,” Sheasley said. “They’re really in charge of the precinct they’re in.”
Sheasley says that when people don’t run for the spot, the county has to then appoint someone for that role.
Ultimately, he believes it’s a great way to get involved in the political process.
“There is a lot to be said for the work that goes into that. It’s an important position and there’s a lot of reward at the end of the day because you’re really making sure the people in your community are participating in a free and fair election,” Sheasley said.
Sheasley said anyone with questions about the Judges of Election position or any other elected position can call the Elections Bureau or visit the county’s website.
