The task force investigating the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump is weighing in on a Secret Service report describing the detail at the Farm Show campaign rally.
The force, chaired by Butler Congressman Mike Kelly, says that “complacency contributed to the death” of Corey Comperatore and the serious injuries to others.
Kelly spoke about the rally and Secret Service concerns on ABC’s This Week.
“If we’re having failures at the Secret Service, this is the elite and best we can put forward, and if we’re having significant failures at that stage, there is something more we have to take a look at,” Kelly said.
Last week the House unanimously passed consent to expand the jurisdiction of the task force to investigate the second assassination attempt in Florida.
Kelly also suggested redelploying funds to help bolster Secret Service protections.
“Our Secret Service is trying to guard more people than they have ever had to guard in the past. And there is such a heightened atmosphere…we have people acting out in a bad way,” Kelly said. “Something is spurring them on to do it. A lot of it is rhetoric. We have to be careful what we say, when we say it and how it’s received by somebody else.”
