A state representative from a neighboring county is proposing a law to address high school athletics classifying.
After the PIAA decision to once again to move Aliquippa High School Football up one classification, State Representative from Beaver County Rob Matzie is proposing a house bill to address the PIAA procedure for classifying.
In 2020, the PIAA moved Aliquippa up from 3A to 4A and then ruled yesterday that Aliquippa would have to play in the 5A classification next year.
This legislation would potentially expand the powers of the Pennsylvania Athletic Oversight Committee’s authority which Matzie serves as vice chairman and is the longest-serving member of the committee.
“It is becoming clearer by the day that the current composition and operation of the PIAA is in dire need of review and examination,” Matzie said in a statement. “The organization is out of touch with the stark differences in demographic and socioeconomic factors from district to district. Their ‘one size fits all’ approach simply doesn’t work and hasn’t for quite some time.”
Butler has proposed another competitive-balance proposal, that would see programs struggling in their current classification given the ability to move down to play a more competitive schedule.
