A state senator from Pittsburgh is making a push to update the Pennsylvania’s Clean Indoor Air Act.
Democrat Jay Costa says there are issues with the act as it’s currently built.
“Because of the loopholes in the Clean Indoor Act, clubs, casinos, bars, taverns and the like allow patrons to smoke indoors exposing workers to dangerous chemicals, toxic gases, and diseases,” Costa said. “We can no longer force workers to choose between a source of income and their health.”
Costa says there are several exceptions in the bill, which allows certain establishments to allow smoking. He also notes that e-cigarettes are not currently included in the Clean Indoor Air Act.
Supporters of the bill say there is a risk of lung cancer from secondhand smoke to those exposed.
