Lawrence James ‘Curtie’ Curtis, age 91 of Chicora, PA passed away Monday, April 16, 2018 surrounded by his family in the Butler Hospital. Born in Moon Run, Pittsburgh, PA. to Russell and Anna Leihgaber on June 25, 1926.
He entered the U.S. NAVY September 7, 1944 and was discharged June 15, 1946 achieving the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He then worked for Penreco as a pumper.
He was a member of Happy Hunters in Fenelton, the American Legion in Lyndora, and the VFW Sportsman Club Sheffield, PA. He was a loyal member of the Chicora Senior Center where he like to play cards – 500 bid. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to camp, brick laying and building homes. He particularly delighted and was proud of his family and grandchildren. He spent many enjoyable hours refinishing gun stocks.
Curtie married the love of his life Eileen E. Young Curtis July 5, 1948 who died April 1, 2009.
He is survived by a son Larry (Sharon) Curtis of Chicora, Kathy (Michael) Franko of Butler, Margie (Gary) Slater of Chicora, 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a sister, Louella McElhaney, and a brother, Edward Mahood.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, William, and sisters, June and Penny.
Friends will be received at STEIGHNER FUNERAL HOME, 111 E. Slippery Rock and Main Streets, Downtown Chicora from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018 with a mass of Christian Burial at noon Thursday at Saint Joseph R.C. Church with Father Rick Thompson officiating. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Chicora American Legion, and the 99th Readiness of Butler.
Interment will be in Hemphill Cemetery in Chicora, PA.
