Legendary Pirates pitcher Bob Veale passes

One of the early hard-throwing pitchers in Pittsburgh Pirates history has passed away. Right-hander Bob Veale died Tuesday at the age of 89. Veale spent the first 11 years of his major league career with the Bucs. He went 116-91 with a 3.06 ERA with the Pirates, and is second all-time on the team’s strikeout list. Veale topped 200 strikeouts four times in his career, including a National league-leading 250 strikeouts in 1964. He was a key part of the Pirates 1971 World Series team after moving into their bullpen. He finished his career with the Boston Red Sox.
