There were 328 new cases reported statewide, with the total closing in on 96,000.
And with coronavirus cases on the rise, state Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine provided some details on who is contracting the virus.
“The number of people over 65 who are positive for COVID-19 has gone down to about half [the state’s] cases,” Levine said. “While the number of cases in the 19 to 49 age range accounts for 45% of our cases.”
Levine says there is concern about younger people spreading the virus to older people.
However, she says there currently aren’t any plans to lockdown the state.
“We are looking at all of our case counts very carefully across the state. We do not plan at this time to use those dramatic statewide-type of measures,” Levine said. “We will watch them very carefully. We strongly support the type of targeted mitigation effort that was implemented in Allegheny County.”
The state estimates 77 percent of total cases have recovered. So far there has been over 835,000 negative tests.
Levine again stressed the need for people to practice the necessary precautions when going out of their houses.
“Please wear a mask when you’re going out in public. Avoid situations where you could be exposing yourself to COVID-19,” Levine said. “For example, if you feel uncomfortable with how close people are at a restaurant, then make a choice to leave. If you are in a store where people are not following the mandatory mask order, then make a choice to leave that store.”
