A company planning to open a local medical marijuana dispensary will continue to follow state guidelines when it comes to moving forward. Co-founder and co-owner of Cresco Yeltrah Trent Hartley told our newsroom earlier this week, “Everything is the state rules and regulations, specifically the Department of Health.”
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently said that the federal government would reverse an Obama-era policy of non-interference in states that have laws allowing for legal marijuana. This decision could lead to federal prosecutors devoting federal resources to crack down on marijuana possession, distribution, and cultivation which are still illegal under federal law.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health is in the process of rolling out the state’s medical marijuana program which was signed into law in April of 2016. Hartley anticipates that his company will continue to follow the direction given by the state Department of Health.
“The Department of Health is the only organization that we’re dealing with. They’re running the whole program; lets put it that way,” Hartley explained.
Under state law, marijuana is now legal for recreational use in eight states and for medicinal use in 21 more.
