Discussion about fair elections in Pennsylvania is planned for a series of workshops to be held in Butler County.
FairDistrictsPA-Butler Chapter is hosting the free informational sessions continuing Saturday, July 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Butler Area Public Library, Monday, July 17 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Cranberry Township Public Library, and next Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Zelienople Public Library.
A recent report has named Pennsylvania as one of the three most extremely gerrymandered states in the country. Gerrymandering is using maps and data to draw voting districts that strongly favor incumbents and have unnatural, lopsided shapes. A bill currently being considered by the state senate and house would establish an independent commission to handle drawing congressional districts. Currently the task is handed over to whichever political party is in power every ten years.
FairDistrictsPA is a coalition of government reform groups co-founded by the League of Women Voters and Common Cause.
