The Mars Area School District is looking into the possibility of recognizing a long-time local game announcer with a special honor.
During the Mars Area School Board meeting earlier this week, a local resident suggested that the announcer’s booth at the Mars Athletic Complex be renamed with signage for Kent Shoemaker.
Shoemaker stepped down at the end of last school year after starting at Mars in 1972 as a math teacher, coaching many teams, and offering play by play commentary at many Mars games since 1984.
After agreeing that this was a good idea, the board directed Superintendent Dr. Mark Gross to research cost and design options for signage or a plaque.
Fundraising could be necessary in order to realize this project as is the possible involvement of Mars students in the design process.
