Two Mars high school athletic programs have been honored as the teams of the year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Mars girls soccer team received the honor for the second straight year after completing a third consecutive unbeaten season while also winning their third consecutive WPIAL and PIAA Class 3A championships. The Mars girls have a 63-match unbeaten streak and also finished last season as the #5-ranked team in the nation according to the final United Soccer Coaches rankings. It was the second straight year they saw a top-five national ranking, after ending the previous season ranked #1.
The Mars boys lacrosse team was also honored by the newspaper after winning their first Class 2A state championship. The program has won five consecutive WPIAL titles. The Planets became the first WPIAL boys or girls team to win a state lacrosse championship.
