Mars Area School District is saying goodbye to several retiring staff members now that the school year has wrapped up.
Seven members of the school’s staff are leaving their positions, including four teachers.
Sally Buszinski, an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Mars Area Centennial School, Mars Area Elementary School and Mars Area Primary Center, is retiring after 19 years in the District.
“One of my favorite memories (at Mars Area) is when my parents could come to class and share their family’s culture,” says Buszinski. “Another is the end-of-the-year performances when the students sing songs or tell jokes with their classmates on stage at the Primary Center.”
Buszinski joined the District as a kindergarten teacher, a position she held for 14 years before becoming an ESL teacher. She previously served a substitute teacher in the District for one year; taught kindergarten for 12 years and pre-Kindergarten for four years at Fort Worth Independent School District (Fort Worth, Texas); and, kindergarten for six years in Marshall County Schools (Cameron, W.Va.).
She holds a master’s degree in early childhood education from West Virginuia University and a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from California University of Pennsylvania.
Joyce Doss, a sixth grade learning support teacher at Mars Area Centennial School, is retiring after 33 years at the District. Doss joined the District in 1988 as a learning support teacher at Mars Area High School and Mars Area Middle School. She has also served as learning support teacher at Mars Area Centennial School and Mars Area Primary Center; and as a gifted teacher at the high school, Centennial School, Primary Center and Mars Area Elementary School.
She also served as a student council advisor at Mars Area High School; a coach for the Girls on the Run program; a special education curriculum leader; and for 13 served the secretary the Mars Area Education Association (MAEA). Prior to joining the District, she served as a high school learning support teacher at Fort Frye Local School District (Beverly, Ohio).
“All the students that I have had the opportunity to know and teach have been the most rewarding part of my career,” says Doss.
Doss holds a master’s degree in reading specialist from Slippery Rock University and a bachelor’s degree in special education (K-12) from Clarion State College.
Beth Lindsey, a second grade teacher at Mars Area Elementary School, is retiring after 31 year in the District. Lindsay came to the District in 1990 as a first grade teacher at the former Mars Area Primary Center in Downtown Mars. During her Mars Area career, she has taught at Mars Area Elementary School, the current Mars Area Primary Center, and the former Adams Elementary School and Middlesex Elementary School.
In addition to teaching, she has served a reading specialist, a Title I teacher, and literacy & mathematics coach; and, she was a co-sponsor of the Children’s Theatre program. Prior to joining the District, she served as a substitute teacher at Freeport Area School District.
Lindsay holds a master’s degree in instruction and learning and a reading specialist certification from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree in elementary and kindergarten education from Pennsylvania State University.
Sue Pizer, a librarian/media specialist and gifted support teacher at Mars Area Middle School, is retiring after 35 years in the District. Pizer, who joined the District in 1886, served as a mathematics teacher at Mars Area High School for 25 years, before moving to the middle school. She also served as a librarian/media specialist at Mars Area Centennial School for three years.
She holds a master’s degree in School Library and Information Technologies, from Mansfield University; a master’s degree in Secondary Guidance from Slippery Rock University; and a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh.
Frank Randza, Director of Buildings & Grounds, is retiring after 33 years in the District. Randza joined the District as Maintenance Supervisor in 1988. He holds an associate’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Jane Roth, Director of Transportation, is retiring after 15 years in the District. Roth, who holds an associate’s degree in business management joined the District in 2006. She has also served as Middlesex Township Tax Collector for 39 years.
In her retirement, she plans to spend time with her grandchildren, to volunteering and travel. She and her husband of 43 years, William, have two children, Katie and Jennifer.
Jill Swaney, Business Manager, is retiring after 31 years in the District. Swaney, who joined the District in 1990, holds a master’s of business administration from Robert Morris College. She previously served as a certified public accountant at a small practice in Butler.
