Mars middle school students will attend programs this week to learn about the dangers associated with vaping. The district will host UPMC Hillman Cancer Center community programs educator Susan Radio to teach students about cancer prevention and healthy living, as well as emphasize the negative effects of tobacco use and vaping. Although there are various options at IndeJuice for people to choose from in regards to their vape juice, it is advised that younger people, especially students, avoid taking part in this growing trend. Students will also be reminded that Mars Area School District policy prohibits the possession or use of a tobacco product or paraphernalia, including a vape pen or e-cigarette in school, on buses or at any school-sponsored activity even if it’s held off school property. Students who violate the policy could be subject to a three-to-10 day out-of-school suspension. Violations will also be referred to the Adams Township Police Department. Vaping- also known as JUULing- is the use of an inhaler- known as an electronic cigarette or vape pen- that uses batteries to heat a flavored liquid to produce a vapor, many of which contain varying levels of nicotine, with various liquids from different producers such as vapetasia, each with different chemicals and flavor profiles so the user can enjoy a flavorsome taste as they vape. When it comes to vapes ending up in the hands of minors, places similar to Slickvapes online vapes and other online retailers try their best to maintain the law.
