Matthias John Johnson, 41, died sleeping in his home on October 26, 2017, at 11:58 pm. He was born in Minot, North Dakota, on July 16, 1976.
Matthias graduated from Butler Senior High School in 1994 and continued his education as a computer science major at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Then he attended Butler County Community College. His work experience included commercial carpet cleaning, retail sales, and restaurant cooking, until he became disabled.
Matthias spent hours every day listening to a wide genre of music. His favorite band was the Grateful Dead. Matthias played the viola, guitar, bass, and drums. He offered advice to others on the production of music.
As an artist, Matthias created abstract pen and ink drawings. He tie dyed T-shirts and tapestries, too. Some were sold at music venues, including those for Grateful Dead concerts.
Matthias was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he attended Saturday evening worship services. He also was a member of the Butler YMCA and the Associated Artists of Butler County.
Matthias loved his cats, friends, and family. Matthias is survived by his mother Patsy Ann Johnson of Butler, his father Ted Giese and Ted’s wife Joan of Butler, his sister Lydia Adams of Littleton, Colorado, and his friend Jennifer Claypool of Butler. He is survived also by three aunts, three uncles, and five cousins living in Wisconsin, Washington, Minnesota, Indiana, and Colorado. He was preceded in death by four grandparents and one aunt.
There will be no public visitation. A memorial service for Matthias will be held at a later date. The final resting place of his ashes will be in the columbarium at Trinity Lutheran Church. Donations in his memory may be sent to Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 120 Sunset Drive, Butler, PA 16001.
