It was a bittersweet evening for three members of Butler City Council Tuesday as this group gathered for their final meeting.
Councilman Kenny Bonus reflected on all that he learned in over four years of heading up the Streets Department.
“I’ve enjoyed learning how city government works. I’ve come to know how certain projects like Sullivan Run can take decades to complete,” Bonus said. “I’ll miss coming into council meetings with the chambers crowded with citizens that believe passionately about something.”
Mayor Ben Smith shared an insight about interacting with his successor, Mayor-Elect Bob Dandoy, while on Council.
“We almost never agreed 100 percent, but 100 percent of the time we can talk about it and we’re still friends,” Smith said.
Councilman Jeff Smith has been involved with local government for around 30 years and he will miss it although he is proud of what the group has been able to accomplish.
“The goal of anybody in elected office ought to be to leave the place a little better than when they got there,” Smith said. “I think the three of us can say we did that and I’m just really proud of that.”
The newly elected Mayor and City Council members will meet at the City Building to officially begin their terms on Monday, January 3rd at 11 a.m.
