Rory McIlroy won his first Masters golf tournament Sunday and became the sixth golfer in history to win a career “Grand Slam”. McIlroy defeated Justin Rose on the first playoff hole after both finished the final round tied at 11-under par. McIlroy birdied the 18th hole, which was replayed in the “sudden death” playoff after Rose completed a par.
McIlroy joins Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tigers Woods as the only golfers to win the four major championships in the Masters era. He earned a famed green jacket in Augusta in his 17th appearance in the tournament. It was McIlroy’s 11th attempt to complete the career mark. Woods was the last to complete the career grand slam 25 years ago.
