Melvin E. Smith Jr., 81, of Butler passed away on Monday, December 13, 2021. He was born in Butler on May 10, 1940 to the late Melvin Smith Sr. and Victoria Nichols. Melvin was employed by Armco for over 30 years and was the first black crane operator in Armco history. He served his country honorably in the US Navy. Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, animals, Steeler’s football, and playing in bands. He was known to be a very talented musician. He was the beloved husband of Rhonda Trufley-Smith; father of Stephanie Smith, Sharon (Bryan) Haney, Jason Trufley, Jessica (BJ) Bucci, and Chad Smith; brother of Walter (Renee) Smith, Johnny (Olivia) Smith, Minerva (Andy) Lane, and Marsha Smith. Melvin is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, a great granddaughter, and a large and loving family. Melvin will be forever missed by Edna Williams. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Sandy Smith. Friends received on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 2-4 PM at the SPENCER D.
