A state lawmaker representing a portion of Butler County is again calling for the impeachment of Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto.
State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe has been at odds with Peduto over his thoughts on gun control. On Wednesday, Metcalfe said Peduto’s latest demands for more gun control are “blatantly illegal and unconstitutional” and asked for him to be removed from office.
“Article 1, Section 21 of the Pennsylvania Constitution clearly states: ‘The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the state shall not be questioned,” Metcalfe (R-Butler) said in a statement. “Rather than applauding Mayor Peduto for imposing his blatantly illegal, unconstitutional and extreme red flag gun control ordinances, my impeachment resolution seeks to protect the rights of law-abiding citizens and their Constitution by removing him from office.”
After the shootings in El Paso and Dayton over the weekend, Peduto doubled down on calls for action at the state and federal levels for what he calls “common sense” gun legislation.
Following the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue last year, Peduto signed bills enforcing firearms legislation into law in Pittsburgh.
“Peduto and his allies expose themselves as callous, gun-grabbing liberals through their exploitation of the heinous crimes committed against the victims of these evil murderous acts in their relentless attempts to criminalize the God-given, constitutionally affirmed rights of law-abiding firearm owners,” Metcalfe said.
