Michael D. Cammisa, Jr., age 81, of Butler, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2019 at Good Samaritan Hospice in Cabot.
Born in Butler on July 24, 1938, he was a son of the late Michele “Michael” and Constantina “Constance” Cammisa.
A 1956 graduate of Butler Senior High School, Michael attended Grove City College, graduating in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree. He majored in mathematics and minored in physical science. He went on to earn a master’s equivalency degree in mathematics education with combined credits from the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, and Slippery Rock University.
Michael taught mathematics at Butler Senior High School for 38 years, and served as Math Department chairman for a number of years. During his career he was a member of the National Education Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and the Butler Education Association.
He enjoyed reading, gardening, and various home improvement projects. But most of all, Michael enjoyed and valued his family and friends.
He was a member of Saint Fidelis Roman Catholic Church. He was also a member of Saint Michael the Archangel Church for many years.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra L. Kaelin Cammisa, whom he married August 5, 1967; four daughters, Shannon Mullner and her husband, James, of Hudson, OH, and their children Anna, Julia, and identical twins Michael and James, Christine Zacherl and her husband, Dale, of Evans City, and their children Autumn and Brielle, Rebecca Hensel and her husband, Fred, of Gibsonia, and their children Alexia and Frederick, and Amber McCaffrey and her husband, Derek, of Freedom.
He is also survived by a brother, John Cammisa and his wife, Marge, of Butler; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by four brothers.
Friends will be received in the Martin Funeral Home, Inc., 429 Center Avenue, Butler, on Monday from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. from Saint Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, 125 Buttercup Road, Meridian, with Father Will Wuenschel officiating.
Entombment will take place in St. Michael’s Cemetery Mausoleum.
