Michael E. Walter, 74, of Butler passed on March 27, 2022, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born on January 13, 1948, in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida and moved to Butler as an infant. He was the son of the late Charles Edward Walter Jr. of Butler and Pauline Buffington Walter.
Mike retired from AK Steel in 2000 after 32 years in the Melt Shop, he was affectionately known as Mikey. He then went on to work as an Arbitrator for the Mannheim Pittsburgh Auto Auction for 10 years. After retiring from the Auto Auction, he stayed active in the community and worked as a driver for Diehl Automotive. Mike was a proud lifelong city resident and was elected to Butler City Council in 2016 and was currently serving his second 4-year term as a council member.
Mike was an active member of the John E. Mair Masonic Lodge No. 729, as well as the A.A.S.R. (Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite) Valley of New Castle. Mike’s interests included the martial arts, specifically the art of Ninjitsu. He trained diligently and achieved the rank of 3rd Degree Blackbelt. In his retirement, Mike developed a passion for the film and television industry. He worked as a background actor for numerous productions across western Pennsylvania. The productions included Manhunt and Archive 81.
Mike’s life and memory are being celebrated by the love of his life, Barbara E. Walter, whom he married on February 6, 1968; his 2 children, James Walter and Jennifer Rice; his son in-law, Ben Rice; his 2 grandchildren, Alex Turberville, and Benjamin Rice; his sister, Sharon (Bill) Hook of Denver, CO.; extended family; his cat, Willie; and 2 dogs, Fiona, and Jonah.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 31, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service at 7:00 p.m. at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, Inc., 124 East North Street, Butler, PA 16001 with Rev. David Janz, officiating.
