Michael W. Moran, 75, of Butler, returned peacefully to the Lord on Thursday, December 17, after an illness.
Born December 5, 1945 in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Walter R. “Mike” Moran and Eleanor Rose Moran.
Mike was a 1963 graduate of Butler High School and completed undergraduate studies at Gannon University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He later pursued a master’s degree in engineering from Penn State University, Behrend Campus. During his professional career Mike worked for engineering firms in Erie and Pittsburgh and was an engineering consultant in various locations across the country. He was also awarded U.S. Patents for his designs. In connection with his work, Mike was a long-time member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Mike was a dedicated runner and participated in many distance races all over the tri-state area. He was blessed with a beautiful voice and enjoyed being a part of various church choirs. He was an avid reader of both professional writings and inspirational literature. He used his experience as a college baseball player to coach East Butler Youth Baseball for many years.
In his retirement Mike developed a natural ability to become an accomplished nature photographer as well as a skilled woodworker. He framed many of his pictures for family and friends. As a member and leader of an artists’ group in Pittsburgh, he won several awards for his self-framed photographic entries. In addition, Mike was dedicated to all things Irish and was very proud to share his father’s heritage.
Mike leaves behind his caregiver, Barbara Moran, and his children, Ellen Moran Lettrich and Michael J. (Kimberly) Moran. He is also survived by his siblings, Kathy Meissner, Virginia Nosse, Miriam Clark, Timothy Moran, John Moran, Richard Moran, Elizabeth Ann McGrady, Mary Therese Peterson, and Terrence Moran, along with their spouses; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Romano, and two nephews, Richard Meissner and Jeremy Moran.
The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot for their excellent care and concern for Mike during his time there.
