High School Sports:
District-9 Baseball Championship:
–Moniteau defeated Chestnut Ridge 2-1 in Somerset Tuesday to win the 3A title. Jake Jewart drove in Hunter Fitzingo with the winning run for the Warriors in the seventh inning. Moniteau will face District-6 runner-up Bald Eagle Area Monday to open the state playoffs.
WPIAL Baseball:
–Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic won the 2A championship with a 5-2 victory over Serra Catholic. Trojans sophomore pitcher Ryan Feczko allowed two runs on four hits over six innings in the victory. Both teams move into the state tournament that begins Monday.
Tonight:
–Mars (16-5) will face North Hills (19-3) in the WPIAL 5A championship game. First pitch is 5pm at the Washington Wild Things Park.
–North Allegheny (13-10) will meet Canon-McMillan (16-5) in the 6A title game at 7:30pm.
WPIAL Softball:
–Avonworth defeated Freeport 4-2 in the 3A consolation game. The loss ends the Yellow Jackets season.
–Karns City will meet Everett today in the District 5-9 3A championship game in Dubois. First pitch is 2pm.
–AC Valley will meet DuBois Central Catholic today in the 1A consolation game in Brockway. Game time is 4pm. The winner moves on to the state tournament.
PIAA Boys Volleyball:
–Butler defeated Altoona 3-1 in the 3A First Round. The Golden Tornado lost the first match 25-27, but stormed back with three wins in a row, 25-22, 25-16 and 25-16 to advance into the state quarterfinals. Butler will meet North Allegheny for the fourth time this season Saturday. North Allegheny defeated Warwick 3-0.
PIAA Boys Lacrosse:
–Mars defeated Erie Cathedral Prep 20-8 in the 2A state First Round. The Planets meet Palmyra Saturday in the quarterfinals.
–Pine-Richland defeated State College 18-2 in the 3A First Round.
–North Allegheny was eliminated by Manheim Township 15-5.
PIAA Girls Lacrosse:
–Pine-Richland lost to Wilson 12-9 in the First Round.
