We now have more information about the accident Wednesday morning on Route 8 that resulted in multiple injuries.
The three vehicle crash happened around 7:30 a.m. at Route 8 South and Airport Road in Penn Township. One vehicle was traveling east on Airport Road crossing Route 8, one was traveling west on Airport Road crossing Route 8 and the third was traveling south on Route 8.
Sergeant Cheryl Cranmer is the investigating officer with the Penn Township Police:
“What we don’t know and what we’re still trying to narrow down is just who had the green light. We’re pretty sure at this point; we’ve got one more witness to talk to, as to who had the light at what time and from basically where the vehicles were and where they landed. My crash investigator still has to look at my photos and he’ll give me a final determination.”
Multiple people were trapped in two vehicles when crews arrived and four people needed to be flown via helicopters to two different Pittsburgh hospitals. Two people involved in the crash—Zach and Jenny Martin, are in critical condition, according to family members. Another person also remains in critical condition.
The motorists in the third vehicle did not appear to be seriously injured.
“The vehicle that was on West Airport Road had four occupants in it, three of them were clients from The ARC of Butler County. They went to Butler Memorial. None of them appeared to be injured, I think that was a precaution they did for those folks,” Cranmer explained.
The crash caused major delays as the Route 8 southbound lane was restricted. This accident is still under investigation but initial findings are that narcotics were found in the vehicle traveling south on Route 8.
