With many folks firing up the grill for the Memorial Day weekend, it’s a good time to make sure all cooking is being done safely.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that although grill fires occur all year, two of the peak months are May and June, behind only July.
The leading causes of grill fires include failing to clean the grill, the heat source being located too close to combustible materials, leaving equipment unattended, and leaks or breaks in the grill or fuel source.
The NFPA recommends that residents check gas tanks for leaks, keep children and pets away from the grilling area, never leave the grill unattended, and never add flammable liquids to fire in a grill.
