A total of 97 disciplinary actions were filed across the state in May for unsafe digging practices- including one in Butler County.
The local violation occurred on March 7th when West Penn Utilities was working for Comcast to install conduit in Cranberry Township on Route 19 near Rowan Road. While drilling at a depth of six feet, a traffic loop fiber line became wrapped around the drill head. Adams Township was cited and fined $250 for failing to respond to a routine One Call ticket in the required amount of time. Cranberry Township was also fined $500.
The PA One Call Damage Prevention Committee is tasked with reducing the number of hits on underground utilities. This committee is part of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s independent Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement.
State law requires contractors and residents to contact PA One Call by dialing 8-1-1 at least three business days before an excavation so utilities can mark where lines are located.
