The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is taking the next step in the process of enacting a new area code for many residents in neighboring Armstrong, Clarion, and Venango Counties.
Beginning Saturday, residents in those areas are being asked to start voluntarily dialing 10 digit phone numbers which include the area code.
Area code 582 has been designated as the new overlay code for much of central and northwest Pennsylvania which currently uses the 814 area code. Residents should check devices that store telephone numbers to make sure all 10 digits have been entered.
This 582 area code will be assigned to new telephone numbers once the available supply of numbers in the 814 area code is exhausted. The 814 area code was established in 1947 as one of Pennsylvania’s four original area codes.
Dialing of area codes will be required for all calls starting in April of 2021.
