Governor Josh Shapiro has announced a new initiative that takes aim to increase solar power in the commonwealth.
The Governor wants to get the state 50 percent of its electricity from solar power. Shapiro unveiled the Pennsylvania Project to Utilize Light and Solar Energy (PA PULSE) earlier this week.
With 10 solar arrays being built in six Pennsylvania counties the commonwealths carbon footprint will be reduced by over 150,000 metric tons of CO2 each year starting next year.
Shapiro adds that the solar arrays will help power the future of labor in Pennsylvania.
“By building these solar farms we’re creating more than 200 union jobs, supporting our labor and electrical workers who are building the energy future right here in Pennsylvania,” Shapiro said.
In the agreement with Lightsource bp will build, own, and operate the 10 solar arrays but, electric prices will be based off competitive pricing for the next 15 years.
