Pittsburgh International Airport is getting a makeover.
Construction on a new landside terminal is expected to begin in 2019 and be ready to open in 2023.
The new terminal would eliminate the underground train and most of the escalators- putting baggage, check-in, TSA and the gates all on one level.
One of the reasons behind this redesign is to downsize. When the airport opened 25 years ago, 38 million people used it every year. Now, officials say it serves more than eight million passengers.
The cost is expected to be $1 billion. No local tax dollars will be used.
