With the freezing temperatures in store Friday, fire officials are urging people to be careful when heating the homes.
Nearly half of all home heating equipment fires happen during the winter months. It’s also the second-leading cause of home fires in the United States.
Space heaters are most often responsible for home heating equipment fires, with the National Fire Protection Association saying they account for one-third of the share.
They encourage keeping flammable items at least three feet away from space heaters. They also say to turn the portable heaters off when going to bed.
Also, make sure smoke alarms are located throughout the home and test them monthly.
