A local elementary school has made a sizable donation to the Red Cross to help with hurricane relief efforts.
On Friday, students and staff at Northwest Elementary School in Butler Township- which is part of the Butler Area School District- presented a check to the American Red Cross for over $3,600.
Northwest School Counselor Harold Dunn said the school had anticipated raising about $500 over a four-day period through a penny drive but exceeded that total on the first day and continued to raise more every day following.
“Students were bringing in their ice cream money- they weren’t getting ice cream that day and instead donating the money,” Dunn said. “I heard some students brought in their weekly allowance.”
The Red Cross’ Dan Tobin said the money will help those recovering from Hurricane Harvey in Houston.
About 350 students in kindergarten through 4th grade attend Northwest.
