At the Olympics:
–United States distance runner Cole Hocker captured the men’s 1,500-meter run. The win might be one of the Paris games biggest upsets, with Hocker catching and passing world champion Josh Kerr of Great Britain at the finish. Hocker bettered his personal best by nearly 3 seconds to win in an Olympic-record 3 minutes, 27.65 seconds. He is only the second U.S. man to win the metric mile at the Olympics over the last 112 years.
–American sprinter Gabby Thomas took gold in the 200-meter title.
–The U.S. men’s basketball team defeated Brazil 122-87 in the Olympic quarterfinals. They will play again Thursday against Serbia, who erased a 24-point deficit to beat Australia. Germany and France will meet in the other semifinal.
