Pennsylvania American Water is expressing interest in purchasing the Butler Area Sewer Authority.
Our newsroom has learned that at the sewer authority’s regular board meeting last week, PA American Water officials relayed their interest in buying the authority.
Authority officials say PA American Water is probably in the due diligence stage of the process, and expects them to request public documents soon.
There are also legal questions surrounding the purchase of the authority. It’s the authority solicitor’s belief that this sale would have to be approved by the City of Butler and Butler Township.
It’s still quite early in the process, but private ownership of water treatment systems has grown more popular since a new state law was approved in 2016.
