September is National Recovery Month and Pennsylvanians are being encouraged to submit their personal drug or alcohol addiction recovery stories. Jennifer Smith is Acting Secretary for the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs.
“If you are someone who is living in recovery and would like to share your story with us, we would be happy to receive that information on our website through the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. We will make sure that the stories have no identifying information when they are shared. You can also upload photos or pictures if you would like.”
A statewide kickoff celebration is planned for this Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg. This year’s theme is Join the Voices for Recovery: Strengthen Families and Communities.
According to Smith, education provided by this event and others is crucial in order to reduce stigma and provide a face to the disease of addiction.
“I think that it’s really important that we not just focus on the negative aspect of overdoses and deaths but remember that there is hope for people to receive treatment and to successfully complete that.”
