The Pennsylvania Game Commission is looking to protect turkey populations without reducing the fall season length.
At their meeting last week, the commission’s board gave preliminary approval to eliminate the use of single projectile firearms like muzzleloading rifles, handguns, and slug guns in fall turkey season.
This change is expected to impact few hunters, as did a similar move last year to eliminate the use of centerfire and rimfire rifles. The alternative response to address below-goal turkey populations would be to reduce the length of the season.
This measure will receive a final vote at the Commission’s meeting in July.
