With the end of the school year and summer in full swing, many students will be gaining work experience, earning a paycheck and considering a career through summer jobs.
PA Department of Labor and Industry Secretary Jerry Oleksiak reminds businesses that there are special rules for young workers.
“Pennsylvania’s Child Labor Act protects the health, safety and welfare of minors employed in the commonwealth by restricting employment in certain establishments, including the hours of work, work conditions, and occupations involved,” Oleksiak said.
Businesses that employ young people must follow the laws in place to protect younger workers and ensure that they have a safe experience.
Anyone under 18 needs a work permit before starting work. Those under 16 need written permission from a parent or guardian to go to work.
According to Oleksiak, the rules for businesses to follow with minors are very specific.
“All minors may not work more than six consecutive days and must be allowed a 30-minute meal period on or before five consecutive hours of work.”
