The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission continues to crack down on drivers who aren’t paying their tolls.
Turnpike Commission Chief Compliance Officer Ray Morrow says they go after motorists who owe more than $500 dollars.
If the commission is unsuccessful, they turn it over to PennDOT, which suspends a motorist’s vehicle registration. If violators fail to still pay up, the cases are referred to a District Attorney.
Violators could ultimately face probation, felony theft charges and even jail time.
“They don’t think anything is going to happen to them and they think they can get away with it,” Morrow said. “Unfortunately for years, they have been able to do that. But that’s not the case any longer.”
