The leader of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education is warning the legislature that the current model is unsustainable.
At a hearing earlier this week, Daniel Greenstein said unless the mergers of universities move forward, he sees no viable path for the state system to continue.
“I will be recommending to the board that we come back to the Senate next year with a legislative package to dissolve the system,” Greenstein testified. “If we continue to go down this path what you’re going to see is that the cross-subsidization is going to drain all of us.”
Greenstein is referring to the funding mechanism that shifts money from stronger campuses to struggling ones.
Slippery Rock University is a member of the state system, and has remained a strong asset over the last decade with sustained and increasing enrollment.
