With the new street lights in downtown Butler, pedestrians will also need to be aware of a new way to safely cross the street.
PennDOT says that starting Tuesday, pedestrians will be required to push the call buttons at intersections in order to get the “walking sign.”
They also say that pushing the button will not immediately trigger the walk sign, but that it will happen when traffic can safely come to a stop.
Also, the typical “chiming sound” that Butler pedestrians are used to when the walking sign lights up will be replaced with a verbal cue announcing that the walk sign is on.
There will still be a countdown clock on the walking sign indicating how much time pedestrians have to cross.
