Penn Power is installing new fences at substations in hopes of cutting down on the number of animals who cause power outages during the winter.
Officials say during the cold-weather months, climbing animals often seek food, shelter, and warmth at substations. These new interior fences completely prevent those animals from accessing the substation equipment.
Penn Power installed three fences this year, in Mercer, New Castle, and in Cranberry Township.
They say those substations serve about 15,000 customers.
