The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has received regional and national recognition for a couple of recent projects.
PennDOT was named a regional winner in the America’s Transportation Awards competition in the operational excellence category for their Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program. This program is a five-year pilot to address work zone safety through the deployment of mobile units to detect vehicles traveling at least 11 miles per hour over the speed limit. A camera takes a picture of the offender’s license plate and a violation is mailed to the address on file.
PennDOT also received recognition from the National Asphalt Pavement Association for a partnership with a private company. Together with Glenn O. Hawbaker Incorporated PennDOT won a 2019 Quality in Construction Award for work done on Interstate 79 in Butler County. Work on the 17 mile project took place around the clock through a rainy construction season to finish in November of 2018. This project was also selected to be one of the pilots for PennDOT’s Long Life Asphalt Pavement research program.
