The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently received a federal grant that could impact rail freight in Butler County.
A Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grant of over $11 million was recently dispersed by the Federal Railroad Association.
PennDOT will use the money to support the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad’s Rebuilding Western Pennsylvania project which addresses infrastructure improvements to the Main Line Subdivision and P&W Subdivision in Jefferson, Armstrong, Butler, and Lawrence counties.
The project improves safety, freight reliability, and supply chain efficiency with a total cost of $25 million. In addition to the grant, about $10 million will come from the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad with the remaining $4 million kicked in by PennDOT.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
