Winter road maintenance is a big undertaking for PennDOT every year. But, local crews are coming into the season down a few employees.
Sparky Mares of PennDOT says right now they are looking for quite a few new workers.
“The turnover for our older workers has really taken its toll right now,” Mares said. “Actually at the moment we have openings for three full-time operators, one-full time mechanic, and I think four or five temporary operators.”
Mares says the turnover is a result of experienced drivers retiring over the past five years. But, they have had a number of young people recently join the crew.
“We’re in the process of hiring all new operators. We’ve got another batch in this year. They’re young, both guys and girls too. They know how to drive, but it’s just teaching them how to do the plowing and the spreading,” Mares said.
