Today kicks off National Work Zone Awareness Week.
The annual event aims to bring awareness to the need to drive safely in construction areas.
PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian says with another construction season underway, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings in work zones. She says there have been too many unnecessary injuries and deaths.
“Since 1970, PennDOT has lost 90 workers in the line of duty,” Gramian said. “Additionally, there were 1,617 crashes in Pennsylvania work zone areas in 2021.”
Drivers who are speeding through work zones or crash in a construction area automatically lose their license for 15 days. Fines are also doubled for traffic violations in work zones.
